Your roof has numerous natural enemies, from the sun and wind to rain, snow, and much more. Each negatively affects your roof differently until you are in need of a new roof.
So how do these various, seemingly harmless agitants affect your roof?
Sun: Ultraviolet (UV) light and heat wreak havoc on your roof, causing roofing materials to deteriorate over time.
Rain: If water finds its way under your shingles, it can cause the roof structure to rot. Plus, moisture encourages the growth of mold and mildew.
Wind: If your shingles are slightly loose, high winds can lift shingles’ edges and force water and debris underneath them or worse. High winds could potentially rip loose shingles from your roof completely.
Snow / Ice: Melting snow often refreezes at a roof’s overhang where the surface is cooler, forming an ice dam, blocking proper drainage into the gutters. This can cause water to back up into the shingles and seep into your home.
Condensation: Moisture in a poorly ventilated attic promotes decay of wood sheathing and rafters, possibly destroying a roof structure.
Moss and Algae: Algae feeds on the limestone found in asphalt shingles, slowly eating away at your once beautiful roof. Algae also causes your roof to absorb extra heat from the sun, increasing your energy costs. Fortunately for you, you can save your roof…if you act quickly! But cleaning a roof can be extremely dangerous and should be left to a qualified, licensed, and insured professional company. So trust your roof to Maryland’s leader is safe algae stain removal – Advanced Roof Restoration, a division of Allied Remodeling Corporation.
Trees and Natural Debris: Falling tree branches and other debris can damage and puncture shingles and other roofing materials.
So, what kind of shape is your roof in?

Believe it or not, your gutters play a major role in the overall appearance of your home, especially your roof. Keeping your gutters free of debris is a simple task. Still, countless Maryland homeowners neglect their gutters and, as a result, experience expensive damage to their landscape, lawn, shrubbery, walls, foundation, basement, attic, and roof.
Maryland Gutter Maintenance Tips
1. Clean any leaves, twigs or other debris off the roof. Once the roof is clean of debris, start on the gutters.
2. Gutters should be cleaned when they are dry.
3. Clean the gutters with a narrow stiff-bristled brush and sweep out all debris.
4. Check all the supports when the gutters themselves are clean enough
5. Use a garden hose to flush out any remaining debris.
6. Use the hose to test the gutters ability to rapidly redirect water.
Routine maintenance now could save you a lot of money later!
If you do come across a more serious roofing problem, give the Maryland roofing experts at Allied Remodeling a call!

Step 1: Make the decision to address your old, worn out roof
Step 2: Find a reputable Maryland roofer to complete the work…but how?
The Internet is filled with countless roofing contractors throwing out claims and guarantees. But how do you know whom to trust? Well, there are a number of things to consider before hiring your roofing contractor.
Do Your Homework: It is important to research prospective roofers before making any decisions. Remember, every reliable roofing company has the following in common:
- License and insurance: Hiring an uninsured roofer is a disaster waiting to happen. Make sure any roofer you talk to has a current license number and liability coverage.
- References: Do not be afraid to ask for references. Any reputable roofer will gladly hand over any references they have. They WANT TO show you work they have done. If any roofer refuses to provide references, run for the hills!
- Workmanship Warranty: Reliable roofers will give you an official warranty. And get it in writing! Do not rely on verbal warranties.
- Experience: We are not saying that new companies do not do good work, but experienced roofers will have more references to show you – ensuring you hire a quality roofing company. Remember, practice makes perfect.
- Ask Questions: Do not hesitate to ask questions, if you have any. Now is the time to ask anything and everything.
Step 3: Put your Roof in the Hands of Maryland’s Premiere Roofers – Allied Remodeling!

Every home can use a few pick-me-ups when it comes to energy efficiency. As our houses age, they naturally lose some of their original energy efficiency. But don’t worry, there is a simple way to test your home and determine just home must energy you are currently wasting.
In order to find out just how energy efficient your home currently is you can perform a do-it-yourself home energy audit. Once this audit is completed and you know just what needs to be addressed, it is time to get to work. But there are other ways to reduce energy consumption besides home improvement projects (though these will prove the most effective).
Below you will find several fast and free methods, provided by the California Energy Commission, to improve your home’s energy efficiency and help reduce your monthly energy bill.
1. Let the sunshine in. Open drapes and let the sun heat your home for free. Close them again at sundown so they help insulate.
2. Rearrange your rooms. Move your furniture around so you are sitting near interior walls – exterior walls and older windows are likely to be drafty. Don’t sit in the draft.
3. Keep it shut. Traditional fireplaces are an energy loser – it’s best not to use them because they pull heated air out of the house and up the chimney. When not in use, make absolutely sure the damper is closed.
4. Eliminate wasted energy. Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms. Unplug that spare refrigerator in the garage if you don’t truly need it – this seemingly convenient way to keep extra drinks cold adds 10-25 percent to your electric bill. Turn off kitchen and bath-ventilating fans after they’ve done their job – these fans can blow out a house-full of heated air if inadvertently left on.
5. Shorten showers. Simply reducing that lingering time by a few minutes can save hundreds of gallons of hot water per month for a family of four. Showers account for 2/3 of your water heating costs. Cutting your showers in half will reduce your water heating costs by 33 percent.
6. Use appliances efficiently. Do only full loads when using your dishwasher and clothes washer. Use the cold water setting on your clothes washer when you can. Using cold water reduces your washer’s energy use by 75 percent.
7. Put your computer and monitor to sleep. Most computers come with the power management features turned off. On computers using Windows, open your power management software and set it so your computer goes to sleep if you’re away from your machine for 5 to 15 minutes. Those who use Macintosh computers look for the setting in your Control Panels called “Energy Saver” and set it accordingly. When you’re done using your computer, turn it off (see next tip). Do not leave it in sleep mode overnight as it is still drawing a small amount of power.
8. Plug “leaking energy” in electronics. Many new TVs, VCRs, chargers, computer peripherals and other electronics use electricity even when they are switched “off.” Although these “standby losses” are only a few watts each, they add up to more than 50 watts in a typical home that is consumed all the time. If possible, unplug electronic devices and chargers that have a block-shaped transformer on the plug when they are not in use. For computer scanners, printers and other devices that are plugged into a power strip, simply switch off the power strip after shutting down your computer.

If you feel you are spending way too much on your utility bills every month, it may be because your home is not as energy efficient as it could be. In order to find out if your home is up to snuff or not, you have two options: pay a professional hundreds of dollars to inspect your home or conduct your very own home energy assessment.
If you are like most homeowners today, you simply do not have the extra money to pay a professional to conduct a home energy audit. So it is time to roll up your sleeves and get to work. A do-it-yourself home energy assessment may seem like a daunting task, but it is actually much easier than you may expect. Here is what you need to do…
First, compile a list of obvious air leaks, aka drafts. Check for indoor air leaks such as gaps along baseboards, the edge of your flooring, and at junctures of the walls and ceilings. You should also see if there is air flowing through your electrical outlets, switch plates, window frames, weather stripping, fireplace dampers, attic hatches, and wall- or window-mounted air conditioners. You can do this by holding a lit candle up to the previously mentioned areas of your home. If the flame moves or is blown out, you could have an air leak. You may be able to seal some of these drafts with caulk or weather stripping, but others may require a professional.
Reducing drafts in your home can add up to anywhere from 5% to 30% in annual energy savings, not to mention a more comfortable house.
If you feel it may be time to call a professional or if you have any questions, contact Allied Remodeling Corporation by calling 410-769-9700 or click here today!

Shingles. They look great and they protect your roof. Other than that, most homeowners don’t know anything about them, especially when it comes to maintenance and replacement.
Your roof is arguably the most important part of your home. It protects you from the elements and it ensures protection for the rest of your house from normal wear and tear. So it makes sense to take good care of your roof, and most notably, your shingles.
Do you know when you should have your shingles replaced? The shelf life of your shingles is approximately 20-30 years, but there are competing theories as to when exactly you need to replace your roof.
The first theory states that you should replace all of your shingles at the first sign of any damage. When you see one shingle start to curl or shrink, you should re-shingle your entire roof. The second theory states that instead of panicking at the first sign of damage, you should wait until there is a clear problem. While this theory is riskier, it is also very rewarding, saving you tons of money. The risk however is that if your roof wears down enough that a major storm strikes the under structure, you could be stuck repairing quite a bit more than just the shingles on top of your roof. So are you the gambling type?
Either way, you should have a professional roofer inspect your shingles before doing anything. They have the knowledge and know how to best assess the situation and provide you with a plan of action and if it is determined that you should re-shingle, an estimate.

Replacing siding can run you thousands upon thousands of dollars. Knowing what you are getting into and properly budgeting for your next home improvement project is extremely important.
Poor planning and unexpected costs can send your project way over budget. So it pays to be prepared.
There are several factors that will affect the cost of your next siding project. They are:
Material : The material you choose will play the biggest role in determining the cost of your home improvement project. Consider the type of material carefully, not only in terms of how it will look but also how well it will stand up against the weather. Additionally, there are various grades used for each type of materials, indicating the quality that you can expect.
Lifespan : Each material has a different expected lifespan. What may initially appear to be a cheaper option may cost you in the long run.
Labor : In addition to the cost of contractors to complete the installation work, you will also need to consider any preparation work required as part of the cost of siding installation. Do you currently have siding that will need to be removed? That will cost extra. If there is water damage underneath of your old siding, that will cost extra to repair. These extra expenditures add up quickly.
Maintenance : The level of maintenance required will vary according to the material used for the siding, which will affect the overall cost. Factor the cost of siding maintenance into the price of siding.
Long Term Savings : Siding can affect the insulation of your property, which can help to reduce your heating bill.
So research your options and choose a siding material that makes sense for you, your home and your budget.
Installing vinyl siding is a great way to increase the value and energy efficiency of your home while giving it a brand new look that is completely maintenance free. There are many profiles, color combinations and trim accessories designed to complement your home and your neighborhood. CertainTeed offers the widest color palette in the industry with a broad line of high-quality siding products that are backed with outstanding warranty coverage. As a certified Certainteed Vinyl Siding Applicator, Allied Remodeling assures a professional installation with attention to detail unparalleled in the industry.

Tuesday saw the largest East Coast earthquake in more than 60 years – 5.9 (moderate) on the Richter scale – hit Maryland. A 6.0 earthquake is considered “strong” and “can be destructive in areas up to about 160 kilometres (100 mi) across in populated areas.”
Although Tuesday’s tremor only lasted a few moments, several buildings still sustained noticeable damage.
This weekend Hurricane Irene is expected to reach the United States, marking the first time a hurricane has hit the U.S. mainland since 2008.
Irene’s projected path will begin around the North Carolina-South Carolina border and work its way north towards Maryland. The hurricane, which is currently a category 2, is expected to reach a Cat. 3 storm, with winds surpassing 110 miles per hour, when it hits North Carolina.
What does this all mean for your home? Only time will tell.
“We’re concerned about the potential double whammy, with the hurricane moving up the coast for the weekend. Anything knocked loose by the earthquake could be made worse by the hurricane,” said Cory Kegerise of the Maryland Historical Trust.
If you find your home has been damaged by Hurricane Irene and do not know who to turn to, give Allied Remodeling a call.

New windows. Who needs ‘em, right? Well, you do.
Despite what you may think, new windows –the last thing most homeowners think about when it comes to home improvement – are more than just a luxury item. New windows are arguably more beneficial for your home than either a kitchen or bathroom renovation.
Replacing your outdated windows can significantly impact your energy usage, improving your home’s energy efficiency. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that as much as one third of the average home’s heat loss occurs through windows and doors.
Today’s windows are more advanced than ever before. And energy efficiency is at the top of most manufacturers’ lists. Older windows, like single-pane windows are enormously inefficient. Upgrading to double-pane windows will greatly improve energy efficiency, reducing your energy consumption and lowering your heating and cooling bills. Improving your home’s energy efficiency will also boost your home’s resale value.
Other recent improvements in windows include coatings that can help reduce heat transfer and protect your interiors from the sun’s light, meaning your carpet, furniture, and valuable artwork will be less likely to fade.
If you feel it may be time for new windows, contact a professional to come out and look at your home. They will be able to guide you in the right direction.
