If you are like most homeowners, you have no idea how to tell when your siding needs to be replaced. That is unless it is falling off the side of your house. But there are warning signs to be on the look for before your siding situation devolves into a home improvement emergency.

If any of these sounds like your home, it is probably time to replace your siding:

•      Selling Your Home: If the condition of your home’s exterior is keeping you from selling your home, it is probably time to replace your siding.

•      Water Damage: If there is noticeable water damage on your siding, or if your siding is leaking, it is probably time to replace your siding.

•      Dry-rot: If your siding is not protecting your walls from dry-rot, it is probably time to replace your siding.

•      Mold: If there is noticeable mold on your siding and any of your family members (especially children) have respiratory problems caused by fungal growth, it is probably time to replace your siding.

•      Age: If your siding is just too old, it is probably time to replace your siding.

•      Severe Weather: If your siding has been exposed to and damaged by severe weather conditions, it is probably time to replace your siding.

•      Money: If it would cost almost as much to repair and paint your siding as it would to replace it, then it is probably time to replace your siding.

•      And of course: If you do not like the way your defective, ugly, or old siding looks, then it is probably time to replace your siding.

Why Replace Your Siding

The Importance of Attic Insulation

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Insulating your attic is a great way to improve the overall comfort of your home while also reducing your monthly energy bills and thus saving you money! It’s a win-win. But before you go throwing pink insulation all around your attic, there are a few things you should know.

•      Seal all attic-to-home air leaks: Insulation will not stop airflow, so if you want your insulation to be effective, you must first seal any air leaks.

o    Duct exhaust fans to the outside: Use a tightly constructed box to cover fan housing on attic side. Seal around the duct where it exits the box. Seal the perimeter of the box to the drywall on attic side.

o    Cover openings into attic: Cover with openings with plywood then seal to the attic side of the ceiling. area with plywood and seal to the attic side of the ceiling.

o    Seal around chimney and framing: Do this with a high-temperature caulk or furnace cement.

o    At the tops of interior walls, use long-life caulk to seal the smaller gaps and holes. Use expanding foam or strips of rigid foam board insulation for the larger gaps.

•      Clearance: Make sure insulation doesn’t block soffit vents to allow for attic ventilation.

•      Check the attic ceiling for water stains or marks: If you find any such signs of roof leaks, contact a roofing repair company, like Allied Remodeling, immediately.

Fast and Free Energy Saving Solutions for Your Home

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Every home can use a few pick-me-ups when it comes to energy efficiency. As our houses age, they naturally lose some of their original energy efficiency. But don’t worry, there is a simple way to test your home and determine just home must energy you are currently wasting.

In order to find out just how energy efficient your home currently is you can perform a do-it-yourself home energy audit. Once this audit is completed and you know just what needs to be addressed, it is time to get to work. But there are other ways to reduce energy consumption besides home improvement projects (though these will prove the most effective).

Below you will find several fast and free methods, provided by the California Energy Commission, to improve your home’s energy efficiency and help reduce your monthly energy bill.

1.    Let the sunshine in. Open drapes and let the sun heat your home for free. Close them again at sundown so they help insulate.

2.    Rearrange your rooms. Move your furniture around so you are sitting near interior walls – exterior walls and older windows are likely to be drafty. Don’t sit in the draft.

3.    Keep it shut. Traditional fireplaces are an energy loser – it’s best not to use them because they pull heated air out of the house and up the chimney. When not in use, make absolutely sure the damper is closed.

4.    Eliminate wasted energy. Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms. Unplug that spare refrigerator in the garage if you don’t truly need it – this seemingly convenient way to keep extra drinks cold adds 10-25 percent to your electric bill. Turn off kitchen and bath-ventilating fans after they’ve done their job – these fans can blow out a house-full of heated air if inadvertently left on.

5.    Shorten showers. Simply reducing that lingering time by a few minutes can save hundreds of gallons of hot water per month for a family of four. Showers account for 2/3 of your water heating costs. Cutting your showers in half will reduce your water heating costs by 33 percent.

6.    Use appliances efficiently. Do only full loads when using your dishwasher and clothes washer. Use the cold water setting on your clothes washer when you can. Using cold water reduces your washer’s energy use by 75 percent.

7.    Put your computer and monitor to sleep. Most computers come with the power management features turned off. On computers using Windows, open your power management software and set it so your computer goes to sleep if you’re away from your machine for 5 to 15 minutes. Those who use Macintosh computers look for the setting in your Control Panels called “Energy Saver” and set it accordingly. When you’re done using your computer, turn it off (see next tip). Do not leave it in sleep mode overnight as it is still drawing a small amount of power.

8.    Plug “leaking energy” in electronics. Many new TVs, VCRs, chargers, computer peripherals and other electronics use electricity even when they are switched “off.” Although these “standby losses” are only a few watts each, they add up to more than 50 watts in a typical home that is consumed all the time. If possible, unplug electronic devices and chargers that have a block-shaped transformer on the plug when they are not in use. For computer scanners, printers and other devices that are plugged into a power strip, simply switch off the power strip after shutting down your computer.

Do-it-yourself Home Energy Audit

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

If you feel you are spending way too much on your utility bills every month, it may be because your home is not as energy efficient as it could be. In order to find out if your home is up to snuff or not, you have two options: pay a professional hundreds of dollars to inspect your home or conduct your very own home energy assessment.

If you are like most homeowners today, you simply do not have the extra money to pay a professional to conduct a home energy audit. So it is time to roll up your sleeves and get to work. A do-it-yourself home energy assessment may seem like a daunting task, but it is actually much easier than you may expect. Here is what you need to do…

First, compile a list of obvious air leaks, aka drafts. Check for indoor air leaks such as gaps along baseboards, the edge of your flooring, and at junctures of the walls and ceilings. You should also see if there is air flowing through your electrical outlets, switch plates, window frames, weather stripping, fireplace dampers, attic hatches, and wall- or window-mounted air conditioners. You can do this by holding a lit candle up to the previously mentioned areas of your home. If the flame moves or is blown out, you could have an air leak. You may be able to seal some of these drafts with caulk or weather stripping, but others may require a professional.

Reducing drafts in your home can add up to anywhere from 5% to 30% in annual energy savings, not to mention a more comfortable house.

If you feel it may be time to call a professional or if you have any questions, contact Allied Remodeling Corporation by calling 410-769-9700 or click here today!

When to Replace Your Shingles

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Shingles. They look great and they protect your roof. Other than that, most homeowners don’t know anything about them, especially when it comes to maintenance and replacement.

Your roof is arguably the most important part of your home. It protects you from the elements and it ensures protection for the rest of your house from normal wear and tear. So it makes sense to take good care of your roof, and most notably, your shingles.

Do you know when you should have your shingles replaced? The shelf life of your shingles is approximately 20-30 years, but there are competing theories as to when exactly you need to replace your roof.

The first theory states that you should replace all of your shingles at the first sign of any damage. When you see one shingle start to curl or shrink, you should re-shingle your entire roof. The second theory states that instead of panicking at the first sign of damage, you should wait until there is a clear problem. While this theory is riskier, it is also very rewarding, saving you tons of money. The risk however is that if your roof wears down enough that a major storm strikes the under structure, you could be stuck repairing quite a bit more than just the shingles on top of your roof. So are you the gambling type?

Either way, you should have a professional roofer inspect your shingles before doing anything. They have the knowledge and know how to best assess the situation and provide you with a plan of action and if it is determined that you should re-shingle, an estimate.

If you have any questions, contact Allied Remodeling Corporation by calling 410-769-9700 or click here today!

5 Factors That Affect the Cost of Siding DoItYourself.com

Five Factors to Consider Before Purchasing Siding

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

Replacing siding can run you thousands upon thousands of dollars. Knowing what you are getting into and properly budgeting for your next home improvement project is extremely important.

Poor planning and unexpected costs can send your project way over budget. So it pays to be prepared.

There are several factors that will affect the cost of your next siding project. They are:

Material : The material you choose will play the biggest role in determining the cost of your home improvement project. Consider the type of material carefully, not only in terms of how it will look but also how well it will stand up against the weather. Additionally, there are various grades used for each type of materials, indicating the quality that you can expect.

Lifespan : Each material has a different expected lifespan. What may initially appear to be a cheaper option may cost you in the long run.

Labor : In addition to the cost of contractors to complete the installation work, you will also need to consider any preparation work required as part of the cost of siding installation. Do you currently have siding that will need to be removed? That will cost extra. If there is water damage underneath of your old siding, that will cost extra to repair. These extra expenditures add up quickly.

Maintenance : The level of maintenance required will vary according to the material used for the siding, which will affect the overall cost. Factor the cost of siding maintenance into the price of siding.

Long Term Savings : Siding can affect the insulation of your property, which can help to reduce your heating bill.

So research your options and choose a siding material that makes sense for you, your home and your budget.

Installing vinyl siding is a great way to increase the value and energy efficiency of your home while giving it a brand new look that is completely maintenance free. There are many profiles, color combinations and trim accessories designed to complement your home and your neighborhood. CertainTeed offers the widest color palette in the industry with a broad line of high-quality siding products that are backed with outstanding warranty coverage. As a certified Certainteed Vinyl Siding Applicator, Allied Remodeling assures a professional installation with attention to detail unparalleled in the industry.

Deck Repair and Maintenance Tips

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

Decks can be great for everything from entertaining and throwing parties to just lounging around. But decks can also be a lot of work. They require annual maintenance, repair, and a little tender love and care.

If you are up to the task, installing a new deck can be well worth it. And if you know what you are doing, maintenance and repairs can be a breeze.

This article from HowStuffWorks.com can help. It provides several deck maintenance and repair tips to keep your wooden deck looking great for years to come.

•      Inspect your deck frequently for popped nails and loose railings or boards. Remove and replace any nails that have popped with coated screws, and immediately repair or replace loose railings to avoid hazards.

•      To clean everyday dirt from a wood deck, use a mild household detergent in water to wash it. Rinse thoroughly.

•      Use mineral spirits to remove stains caused by tree sap. Rinse thoroughly.

•      To remove mildew, wash the deck with a bleach and water solution (1 cup bleach to 1 gallon warm water). Flush the area with water and allow it to dry. Commercial brighteners are also available; follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If mildew is a continued problem, you probably have too much shade on your deck. Check to see if you can trim some tree branches or bushes to expose more of the deck to the sun’s drying effects.

•      Deck stains make routine cleanup much easier and preserve the life of the wood. Apply stains specially formulated for decks immediately over new wood, except for pressure-treated lumber, which should age for six months before being stained. The deck will benefit from a new coat of stain every one to two years (be sure the stain contains commercial sealant). Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for applying the stain. If your deck has been painted, you will have to remove the paint before a stain can be applied.

•      Avoid applying clear finishes, such as varnish or shellac, to wood decks. They don’t withstand sun and moisture, and they must be removed if they start to peel.

Of course, if you would rather leave the work to the professionals, Allied Remodeling is here for you. We also offer several low-maintenance decking options.

With a low-maintenance deck, you’ll have a gorgeous deck that lasts, without the excessive maintenance of real wood. No painting, no staining, no rotting and no termites. And, unlike wood decks, it won’t rot, warp or splinter.

Natural Disasters Plaguing Maryland: Is Your Home Safe?

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Tuesday saw the largest East Coast earthquake in more than 60 years – 5.9 (moderate) on the Richter scale – hit Maryland.  A 6.0 earthquake is considered “strong” and “can be destructive in areas up to about 160 kilometres (100 mi) across in populated areas.”

Although Tuesday’s tremor only lasted a few moments, several buildings still sustained noticeable damage.

This weekend Hurricane Irene is expected to reach the United States, marking the first time a hurricane has hit the U.S. mainland since 2008.

Irene’s projected path will begin around the North Carolina-South Carolina border and work its way north towards Maryland. The hurricane, which is currently a category 2, is expected to reach a Cat. 3 storm, with winds surpassing 110 miles per hour, when it hits North Carolina.

What does this all mean for your home? Only time will tell.

“We’re concerned about the potential double whammy, with the hurricane moving up the coast for the weekend. Anything knocked loose by the earthquake could be made worse by the hurricane,” said Cory Kegerise of the Maryland Historical Trust.

If you find your home has been damaged by Hurricane Irene and do not know who to turn to, give Allied Remodeling a call.
