Severe damage to your roof can result in expensive roof replacement. However, if you catch small roofing concerns soon enough, you may be able to have them fixed before they become major problems, requiring a completely new roof.

Outdoor Warning Signs

Ceiling Spots: These are caused by leaks in your roof.

Damaged Flashing: This can be cause by several factors, including: improper roof installation, drying or cracking of an old roof, improper nailing, or settling of the structure.

Missing Shingles: Whether it is from improper fastening or high winds, missing roof shingles put your roof at increased risk.

Shingle Curling: This is caused by water absorption in wood or fiber-reinforced shake.

Algae Growth: This unsightly algae feeds on the limestone found in asphalt shingles, slowly eating away at your once beautiful roof. The black algae also causes your roof to absorb extra heat from the sun, increasing your energy costs. (Contact Advanced Roof Restoration, a division of Allied Remodeling, for a professional roof cleaning)

Blistering: This is caused when ventilation is inadequate and moisture gets captured in the shingles.

Missing Granules: This is a sure sign that your shingles need replacing.

Buckling: This is caused by improperly felt, or movement of the deck.

Rotting: A common problem with organic based shingles, this roofing problem is caused by moisture absorption by the mat.

If you notice any of the above warning signs, contact a Maryland roofer as soon as possible. Your roofing contractor will come to your home and conduct an outside and inside roof inspection, determining the full extent of the damage. He/she will then be able to explain your best course of action.

Your entire home acts as a single heating and cooling system. Each component affects the next, from your HVAC system and ductwork to your home’s envelope (windows, doors, and floors) and even insulation. If even one area of your home is not doing its job properly, the whole system suffers. And when the whole system suffers, you pay more every month on your energy bills.

So if you feel your home may not be as energy efficient as it could be, you have several options. You can pay to have your HVAC system serviced, you can have your windows replaced, you can have your ductwork insulated, or you can insulate your attic. And while the other home improvement projects can be quite costly, addressing your attic insulation can be a nice cost-effective alternative.

Attic insulation is designed to keep your home warm and cozy in the winter and nice and cool in the summer. If your attic insulation levels are low, your HVAC system will have to work twice as hard to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. And guess what? That will cost you some money!

So what should you do?

For starters, perform a visual inspection of your attic insulation. Look across the span of the attic. If you cannot see your floor joists and your insulation is evenly distributed throughout the attic, you probably have enough insulation. Adding more would just be a waste of money. But if your insulation level is just below your floor joists, you should add more.

So what are you waiting for? Start insulating!

In fact, ENERGY STAR estimates that properly insulating your attic could save you up to 20% on your heating and cooling costs. The recommended insulation level for most attics is R-38 (or about 12–15 inches, depending on the insulation type). In the coldest climates, insulating up to R-49 is recommended.

So get to work making your home more energy efficient and start saving money!

Yes, you read that title correctly. After all, low maintenance does not mean no maintenance. This is especially true during winter – that time of the year when decks are most vulnerable. Fortunately, composite decks require less maintenance and hold up in inclimate weather better than traditional wood decking (with the right maintenance).

Take a look at these composite decking maintenance tips:

Most decking professionals do not recommend using a power washer on your low maintenance deck. However, if you do, use a fan tip nozzle and spray in the direction of the brush/grain pattern. Be sure to use proper safety precautions, including the recommended maximum pressure of 1500 psi.

While rare, if mildew or mold appear on your composite deck, deal with the problem as soon as possible. In most cases, you can rid yourself of mildew with a sponge and a simple solution of liquid dish soap and water. Maintaining a clean, dry surface at all times is the best method to combat mildew.

If it snows, leave the snow shovel inside. Instead, grab a broom and get to sweeping. Shovels can gouge and damage your composite deck surface.

Also, be careful if you decide to use a deicer or salt. These products can damage your deck. Be sure to rinse deicers and salt away as soon as the weather warms up.

Remember: a low maintenance deck still requires a little maintenance. So don’t neglect your composite deck this winter.

Your wood deck is extremely vulnerable to the elements, especially during winter. Rain, ultraviolet light, dew, frost, freezing temperatures, ice, and snow can all wreak havoc on an unprotected deck, jeopardizing both its longevity and appearance. This is why it is so important to stain and seal your deck before winter sets in.

Preparing the Deck: It doesn’t matter if you are staining an old or new wood deck, first you must inspect the surface for cleanliness and make sure it is free from mildew, stains, dirt, and other contaminants.

Selecting the Stain: Be sure to choose a product that is both a stain and a sealer. This will significantly cut down on your work, providing both beauty and a water-repellent finish all in one application. Though more applications may be necessary to achieve your desired look.

Applying the Stain: First, check the weather forecast. Have you heard the saying “don’t rain on my parade?” Well, rain on your deck-staining project is probably worse. So be sure the weatherman is calling for clear skies.

Then, before you get to work, test a patch of wood to make sure you like the color stain you have chosen.

Deck Maintenance: Clear finishes require reapplication every six months to a year, while pigmented finishes and stains require reapplication every two to four years.

So what are you waiting for? Get to work! If you don’t take care of your deck, it may not survive the harsh winter weather.

With the weather unseasonably warm for December, now is the perfect time to clean your siding one last time before winter finally arrives. So get to work and remove that summer/fall dirt before it is too late.

Here’s some tips on how to clean your siding:

Clean With Clear Water: Start simple; see what you can do with your garden hose and a soft-bristle brush with a long handle. If this does not do the trick, power washing might be your best option.

Clean From Bottom to Top: While this may seem counterproductive, the process has been proven to eliminate streaking. Complete one side of the house before moving on to another.

Dealing With Siding Mold and Mildew: Small areas of mold/mildew can actually be dealt with using window cleaner and a soft rag. Larger areas require a soft-bristle brush and a solution of 30% white vinegar and 70% water.

Removing Excess Dirt From Siding

Cleaning bird droppings:

• ArmorAll

• Simple Green

• Any product that meets Manufacturer Recommendation

Clean Grease and Oil Stains:

• Use Cleaners like Fantastik or Murphy’s Oil Soap

The most effective way to complete the cleaning is to first rinse the entire area of siding, exposing problem areas, and then come back to the areas that need attention.

If you have any questions or wish to learn more, please contact Allied Remodeling Corporation by calling 410-769-9700 or click here today!

Are you looking to do some roof remodeling this holiday season? If yes, we are here to help by providing you 10 tips that you should know about roofing before you start on renovating your roof. Read below to learn.

Keep Up Appearances.

When remodeling your roof, take in account look and style. A roof is about 40 percent of a home’s visible exterior. This means you need to pay attention to appearance. Make your home look good.

Exam Your Roof’s Physical Condition.

Make sure you look for cracks, curling, and missing shingles on your roof. Not only is it not safe when your roof is in a bad condition, it is also visually unattractive. Look at your roof from your attic space as well by using a flashlight to search for water stains that signal that your roof has leakage.

Ask The Right Questions.

Make sure your roofing contractor is a legit company. Make sure the contractor has a permanent location for business, a phone number, tax identification number, a business license and positive reviews. Do not forget to ask for documentation of liability insurance and workers’ compensation.

Know The Codes of Your Community.

Make sure you check the local municipal building department to learn precisely how many times you are allowed to recover an existing roof with another layer. Sometimes a community may only allow two layers of roofing material. Any additional layers may be torn off before more roofing can be installed.

Take Photos.

Make sure your contractor takes digital pictures of your home and show you different renderings of how your house would look with different roofing materials.

Having a good roof over your head is important for so many reasons. First of all, there is the aesthetic value and curb appeal associated with a beautiful roof. After all, you want your house to looks its best. Then, of course, there is the actual functionality of your roof. It plays so many roles; you roof is responsible for protecting your family, keeping the elements out of your home, and keeping hot air inside (affecting your home’s energy efficiency).

But with winter right around the corner, you have to wonder if your roof is up to the task. One way to figure this out is to have your roof professionally inspected. This will help to identify any problem areas, abnormalities, or potential damage. Remember, even a little damage can be greatly increased by harsh winter conditions, so you should address any issues before winter sets in.

Of course, you don’t always need a professional roof inspection; sometimes the warning signs are right in front of your face. So here are a few signs to look for:

Leaks in the Attic: If your attic is leaking, that is a sure sign that your roof is in desperate need of repair. So it is a good idea to conduct a self-inspection after a heavy rain. If you find any problem areas, contact a roofing contractor as soon as possible.

Seepage Around the Chimney: If you discover water seeping or draining around your chimney, it is a sign of a leak that needs to be repaired. If this is the case, contact a roofing specialist as soon as possible.

Shingles in Disrepair: Are your shingles cracked, torn, loose or even missing? If so, you should address these issues before they become a major problem.

If you have any questions or wish to learn more, please contact Allied Remodeling Corporation by calling 410-769-9700 or click here today!
