U-Value for Windows: Get Your Money’s Worth

Friday, February 18th, 2011

The U-Value of a window is the way that the rate of heat loss is indicated. In these frigid winter months the U-Value can be something that is very important to both your home and your heating bill. The lower the U-Value of a window, the greater the resistance to the cold and the better insulation the window is providing to your house.

Allied Remodeling Corp. uses windows with a stellar U-value. The values are .23 for double pane energy star rated windows and .18 for triple pane energy star rated windows. It is recommended by EnergyStar the rating be less than .30 for our climate, so Allied Remodeling uses windows go above and beyond the recommended level of protection for your home.

As the Efficient Windows Collabortaion states, “The nationally recognized rating method by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) is for the whole window, including glazing, frame and spacers.” This system considers your complete window in order to ensure a clear reading on the insulation of your home.

Low U-Values help save your family money because the heating bill will be low for your home. The U-Value is also an important component in green living. By expending less energy on heating your home, you can lessen your carbon footprint.

Can insulation help in the summer?

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

It may seem crazy to talk about attic insulation in the middle of a hot summer, but we have good reason.  We all know that insulating your attic can increase your comfort while reducing your heating costs, but, as this article points out, it can also be beneficial in the summer.

Insulation works by slowing the passage of warm air through it.  We mostly focus on its usefulness in keeping warm air inside during the winter.  However, the same principle applies in the summer when insulation can keep warm air out of the house.

As a result, the insulation can help keep your home’s internal temperature down in the summer, which means your cooling system doesn’t have to work as hard.  So insulation can then keep your cooling costs down the same as it does for your heating costs in the winter.

Because of the low demand for insulation in the summer, now’s a great time to get it installed. Contact us and we can get feeling cooler and paying less before you know it.
