The Role Attic Insulation Plays in the Energy Efficiency of Your Home

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Your entire home acts as a single heating and cooling system. Each component affects the next, from your HVAC system and ductwork to your home’s envelope (windows, doors, and floors) and even insulation. If even one area of your home is not doing its job properly, the whole system suffers. And when the whole system suffers, you pay more every month on your energy bills.

So if you feel your home may not be as energy efficient as it could be, you have several options. You can pay to have your HVAC system serviced, you can have your windows replaced, you can have your ductwork insulated, or you can insulate your attic. And while the other home improvement projects can be quite costly, addressing your attic insulation can be a nice cost-effective alternative.

Attic insulation is designed to keep your home warm and cozy in the winter and nice and cool in the summer. If your attic insulation levels are low, your HVAC system will have to work twice as hard to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. And guess what? That will cost you some money!

So what should you do?

For starters, perform a visual inspection of your attic insulation. Look across the span of the attic. If you cannot see your floor joists and your insulation is evenly distributed throughout the attic, you probably have enough insulation. Adding more would just be a waste of money. But if your insulation level is just below your floor joists, you should add more.

So what are you waiting for? Start insulating!

In fact, ENERGY STAR estimates that properly insulating your attic could save you up to 20% on your heating and cooling costs. The recommended insulation level for most attics is R-38 (or about 12–15 inches, depending on the insulation type). In the coldest climates, insulating up to R-49 is recommended.

So get to work making your home more energy efficient and start saving money!

Replacing Your Windows Before Winter Could Save You Money

Friday, December 16th, 2011

If your windows are 15 years old or even older, your wallet may be suffering. Older windows are drafty and allow warm air to escape from your home, meaning your HVAC system has to work even harder to achieve and maintain a comfortable temperature. And the harder your HVAC system works, the higher your heating bills will be every month.

The solution to this problem is simple.

New windows can greatly improve the energy-efficiency of your home. While this may seem like an expensive home improvement project, replacement windows actually have a very good return on investment (ROI).

The increased energy efficiency of your home and, thus, your reduced energy bills means that your new windows will essentially pay for themselves over time. So if you think new windows sound like a good investment for your home, give Allied Remodeling a call.

Allied Remodeling proudly offers Ideal Majestic Signature Series Vinyl Windows.

Majestic Windows are designed to express the way you live your life, Majestic windows can help you create a home that is as unique as you are. Are Your Windows Ready For Winter?

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

Sure winter is still over a month away, but we have already had our first snowfall. And that was in October! So it is obviously not too early to start thinking about those daunting heating bills. One way to combat these soon-to-be much higher heating bills is to first address your windows. That’s right, your windows.

While you may think it makes more sense to examine, service, and possibly replace your furnace, consider this: even a more efficient heater will not be as efficient as it should be if your home is leaking heat. Your whole home is a system, each component affecting the way the other works. So yes, your windows play a crucial role in the heating and cooling of your home.

With winter right around the corner, now is the perfect time to make energy-saving improvements to your windows and other parts of your home.

•      If you windows are fairly new, inspect the exterior caulking around your windows for gaps and cracks. These allow cold air to enter your home and warm air to escape.

•      Consider placing storm windows over the exterior of existing windows to reduce heat loss and prevent drafts.

•      If your windows are fairly old, it may be time to replace them with new energy-efficient windows. In order to ease the expense associated with doing so, consider replacing just a few windows at a time.

So get to work and increase the look, efficiency and comfort of your home with one simple home improvement project. If you have any questions, contact Allied Remodeling Corporation by calling 410-769-9700 or click here today!

Fast and Free Energy Saving Solutions for Your Home

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Every home can use a few pick-me-ups when it comes to energy efficiency. As our houses age, they naturally lose some of their original energy efficiency. But don’t worry, there is a simple way to test your home and determine just home must energy you are currently wasting.

In order to find out just how energy efficient your home currently is you can perform a do-it-yourself home energy audit. Once this audit is completed and you know just what needs to be addressed, it is time to get to work. But there are other ways to reduce energy consumption besides home improvement projects (though these will prove the most effective).

Below you will find several fast and free methods, provided by the California Energy Commission, to improve your home’s energy efficiency and help reduce your monthly energy bill.

1.    Let the sunshine in. Open drapes and let the sun heat your home for free. Close them again at sundown so they help insulate.

2.    Rearrange your rooms. Move your furniture around so you are sitting near interior walls – exterior walls and older windows are likely to be drafty. Don’t sit in the draft.

3.    Keep it shut. Traditional fireplaces are an energy loser – it’s best not to use them because they pull heated air out of the house and up the chimney. When not in use, make absolutely sure the damper is closed.

4.    Eliminate wasted energy. Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms. Unplug that spare refrigerator in the garage if you don’t truly need it – this seemingly convenient way to keep extra drinks cold adds 10-25 percent to your electric bill. Turn off kitchen and bath-ventilating fans after they’ve done their job – these fans can blow out a house-full of heated air if inadvertently left on.

5.    Shorten showers. Simply reducing that lingering time by a few minutes can save hundreds of gallons of hot water per month for a family of four. Showers account for 2/3 of your water heating costs. Cutting your showers in half will reduce your water heating costs by 33 percent.

6.    Use appliances efficiently. Do only full loads when using your dishwasher and clothes washer. Use the cold water setting on your clothes washer when you can. Using cold water reduces your washer’s energy use by 75 percent.

7.    Put your computer and monitor to sleep. Most computers come with the power management features turned off. On computers using Windows, open your power management software and set it so your computer goes to sleep if you’re away from your machine for 5 to 15 minutes. Those who use Macintosh computers look for the setting in your Control Panels called “Energy Saver” and set it accordingly. When you’re done using your computer, turn it off (see next tip). Do not leave it in sleep mode overnight as it is still drawing a small amount of power.

8.    Plug “leaking energy” in electronics. Many new TVs, VCRs, chargers, computer peripherals and other electronics use electricity even when they are switched “off.” Although these “standby losses” are only a few watts each, they add up to more than 50 watts in a typical home that is consumed all the time. If possible, unplug electronic devices and chargers that have a block-shaped transformer on the plug when they are not in use. For computer scanners, printers and other devices that are plugged into a power strip, simply switch off the power strip after shutting down your computer.

Do-it-yourself Home Energy Audit

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

If you feel you are spending way too much on your utility bills every month, it may be because your home is not as energy efficient as it could be. In order to find out if your home is up to snuff or not, you have two options: pay a professional hundreds of dollars to inspect your home or conduct your very own home energy assessment.

If you are like most homeowners today, you simply do not have the extra money to pay a professional to conduct a home energy audit. So it is time to roll up your sleeves and get to work. A do-it-yourself home energy assessment may seem like a daunting task, but it is actually much easier than you may expect. Here is what you need to do…

First, compile a list of obvious air leaks, aka drafts. Check for indoor air leaks such as gaps along baseboards, the edge of your flooring, and at junctures of the walls and ceilings. You should also see if there is air flowing through your electrical outlets, switch plates, window frames, weather stripping, fireplace dampers, attic hatches, and wall- or window-mounted air conditioners. You can do this by holding a lit candle up to the previously mentioned areas of your home. If the flame moves or is blown out, you could have an air leak. You may be able to seal some of these drafts with caulk or weather stripping, but others may require a professional.

Reducing drafts in your home can add up to anywhere from 5% to 30% in annual energy savings, not to mention a more comfortable house.

If you feel it may be time to call a professional or if you have any questions, contact Allied Remodeling Corporation by calling 410-769-9700 or click here today!

What is going green?

Green building is the term used to encompass use of design and construction materials and techniques that are:

  • environmentally responsible
  • encourage energy efficiency
  • conserve natural resources
  • create healthier interior environments for homeowners.

What are the advantages of going green?

  • Lowered ongoing operating costs
  • Improved personal health and comfort
  • Marketability at time of resale.
  • Helping the planet!

How do we make those advantages happen?

  • Your home will be more energy efficient, reducing your monthly utility bills.
  • Improved building techniques and products reduce upkeep and repairs.
  • Superior air sealing and ventilation improve air quality.
  • Foam insulation is more effective against air leakage.
  • Alternative paint and floor finishes are less toxic at application, and over time.
  • For those who are sensitive to chemical particles, dust, or other materials, a cleaner living environment not only means greater comfort, but may mean reduced medical bills.

Like any home renovations, green renovations will be a cost to eh homeowner, however in the long run they will be saving the resident, money, energy and health. If you have any questions about renovating your home, contact Allied Remodeling Corporation by calling 410-769-9700 or click here today!

Feeling the heat? Check your Windows

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

This year has been bringing  on an onslought of heatwaves into the area. It’s hard to surf the tube without hearing about the latest heat advisory and to walk outside without feeling scorched under the sun’s glaring eyes.  Yet inspite of the scorcher, your home is suppose to protect you from getting sick from the heat.

However, not all homes are ventilated enough. If there isn’t enough ventilation circulating around your home, you may be a victim of any heat related illness. Though fans and air conditioning can be pretty effective with keeping you cool–if your windows aren’t safeguarded against bringing in the sun’s heat inside the home, than it’s counterproductive to keep those oscillators on.

This article from Ehow.com has ways and tips on stonewalling your windows against the sun’s rays emitting through. By blocking the sun’s rays from seeping through your windows, you will not only reduce the high temperature in your home but also minimize energy costs too.

One way to block the sun is to invest in getting  a window awning to cover the top portions of your window. They are often attached to the exterior of a home, over the windows and come in different lenghths and sizes. People can even customize them to fit a certain house style or to maximize enough protection from the sun.

Another way to block the sun is to invest in getting either a blackout curtain or a window blind.  Either will get the job done, but again it’s all about preference. A blackout curtain is normally multy layered, thus section of rays of light and are available in different shades or colors. If you don’t mind the cost, than you will be able to savor in more ventilation in your home.

Window blinds are a cheaper alternative to blackout curtains, vary in size and are easily raised or lowered depending on a person’s preference.

Aside from investing in chic awnings, blinds or curtains; it’s also wise to consider getting some plants outside to prevent the sun from reaching the windows, and purchasing insulating foam blocks to bar heat loss and the sun’s harmful rays.

Hopefully these tips helped you insulate your windows better. If you want more ideas or need extra help with your windows, come to us, your friend in business.  Contact Allied Remodeling Corp. by calling 410-769-9700 or click here today!

Friday, June 24th, 2011

New windows. Who needs them, right? Your windows are working perfectly. As far as you’re concerned, the only time you need to replace your windows is when they break.

Well, there are actually several other very good reasons to replace your windows, even if they aren’t broken. This article from GuideToWindows.com explains when it is beneficial to purchase new windows.

Not only will new windows improve the aesthetic appeal of your home, but they will also increase energy efficiency, saving you money every month on your cooling and heating bill.

According to Energy Star, single-pane windows allow heat to escape during the winter and enter during warm months, accounting for 25% to 50% of energy used to heat and cool homes. Replacing single-pane with energy efficient windows could save the typical home about $110 to $400 a year, and replacing double-pane windows with energy efficient ones could save about $20 to $85 a year.

When purchasing new windows, you should look for energy efficient windows with the Energy Star label. This ensures that your new windows have passed the standards put forth by the National Fenestration Rating Council.

In a recent poll done by Harris Interactive, 80% of fathers admitted they wanted gifts related to home improvement.
