Maryland Roofing Services: Selecting Your Roofing Contractor

March 1st, 2012

Step 1: Make the decision to address your old, worn out roof

Step 2: Find a reputable Maryland roofer to complete the work…but how?

The Internet is filled with countless roofing contractors throwing out claims and guarantees. But how do you know whom to trust? Well, there are a number of things to consider before hiring your roofing contractor.

Do Your Homework: It is important to research prospective roofers before making any decisions. Remember, every reliable roofing company has the following in common:

  • License and insurance: Hiring an uninsured roofer is a disaster waiting to happen. Make sure any roofer you talk to has a current license number and liability coverage.
  • References: Do not be afraid to ask for references. Any reputable roofer will gladly hand over any references they have. They WANT TO show you work they have done. If any roofer refuses to provide references, run for the hills!
  • Workmanship Warranty: Reliable roofers will give you an official warranty. And get it in writing! Do not rely on verbal warranties.
  • Experience: We are not saying that new companies do not do good work, but experienced roofers will have more references to show you – ensuring you hire a quality roofing company. Remember, practice makes perfect.
  • Ask Questions: Do not hesitate to ask questions, if you have any. Now is the time to ask anything and everything.

Step 3: Put your Roof in the Hands of Maryland’s Premiere Roofers – Allied Remodeling!

Maryland Roofing Services: The Benefits of a New Roof

February 15th, 2012

We have already explained the inward and outward warning signs you need a new roof. But what are the advantages of a new roof? Is it really better, in the long run, to shell out the money for a roof replacement now than to live with your current roof? Well, yes!

Benefits of a Replacement Roof

  • Energy Efficiency: Old roofs let warm air escape during the winter and let warm air in during the summer. All of this means that your HVAC system needs to work twice as hard to accomplish your desired indoor temperature. And you know what that means? High energy bills!
  • Curb Appeal: A new roof will give your home a fresh, new look and instant curb appeal.
  • Leaky Roofs = Mold: Leaky roofs combined with the humidity of your attic make it the perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew. Mold is not only bad for your home, but also your health. Mold has been linked to several health issues, including asthma, allergies, rashes, sinus infections, cold/flu, pneumonia, skin infections, and much more.
  • Make Your Home Easier to Sell: Realtors estimate that as much as 40 percent of your home’s curb appeal is directly linked to your roof. And first impressions are everything when selling a house.
  • Great Return on Investment (ROI): Roof replacements are amongst the top of the home improvement list in terms of returns on investment, at 67%.
  • Increase Resale Value: Not only will a new roof make your home easier to sell, it will also make it worth more money!

So what are you waiting for? Contact the Maryland roofing experts at Allied Remodeling right away to schedule a roofing consultation. Allied Remodeling Corporation can be reached by calling 410-769-9700 or click here today!

Maryland Roofing Services: Indoor Roof Inspections and Signs You Need a New Roof

February 10th, 2012

Last week, we provided several of the Outward Signs You Need a New Roof. This week, we are going to examine the interior signs of a roofing problem. Remember, if you catch small roofing concerns soon enough, you may be able to have them fixed before they become major problems, requiring a completely new roof.

Interior Warning Signs of a Roofing Problem

Sagging Decking Between Rafters: If this is the case, the decking will also need to be replaced when a new roof is installed.

Light Shining Through the Roof: If light is making its way through your roof, what else is finding its way into your attic? Rain (which could lead to mold and mildew), debris, and pests?

Leaking: Well, leaking is a sure sign of a potentially serious roofing problem. Even if you do not see moisture, look for signs of a leak, such as dark spots in the wood around vents, chimneys, and other holes to the roof.

Are Dark Spots Signs of Old or New Problems: There is an easy way to find out…if the spot is still wet, or if it is soft (test with a screwdriver), the spot is a current problem. If the spot is dry and hard, it is most likely an old problem that has been fixed.

If you notice any of the above warning signs, contact a local Maryland roofing specialist – like Allied Remodeling – as soon as possible. Your roofing contractor will come to your home and conduct an outside and inside roof inspection, determining the full extent of the damage. He/she will then be able to explain your best course of action. If you are lucky and you catch a problem early enough, you may be able to avoid paying for a new roof.

Do I Need a New Roof?

Maryland Roofing Services: Outward Signs You Need a New Roof

February 2nd, 2012

Severe damage to your roof can result in expensive roof replacement. However, if you catch small roofing concerns soon enough, you may be able to have them fixed before they become major problems, requiring a completely new roof.

Outdoor Warning Signs

Ceiling Spots: These are caused by leaks in your roof.

Damaged Flashing: This can be cause by several factors, including: improper roof installation, drying or cracking of an old roof, improper nailing, or settling of the structure.

Missing Shingles: Whether it is from improper fastening or high winds, missing roof shingles put your roof at increased risk.

Shingle Curling: This is caused by water absorption in wood or fiber-reinforced shake.

Algae Growth: This unsightly algae feeds on the limestone found in asphalt shingles, slowly eating away at your once beautiful roof. The black algae also causes your roof to absorb extra heat from the sun, increasing your energy costs.  (Contact Advanced Roof Restoration, a division of Allied Remodeling, for a professional roof cleaning)

Blistering: This is caused when ventilation is inadequate and moisture gets captured in the shingles.

Missing Granules: This is a sure sign that your shingles need replacing.

Buckling: This is caused by improperly felt, or movement of the deck.

Rotting: A common problem with organic based shingles, this roofing problem is caused by moisture absorption by the mat.

If you notice any of the above warning signs, contact a Maryland roofer as soon as possible. Your roofing contractor will come to your home and conduct an outside and inside roof inspection, determining the full extent of the damage. He/she will then be able to explain your best course of action.

The Role Attic Insulation Plays in the Energy Efficiency of Your Home

January 20th, 2012

Your entire home acts as a single heating and cooling system. Each component affects the next, from your HVAC system and ductwork to your home’s envelope (windows, doors, and floors) and even insulation. If even one area of your home is not doing its job properly, the whole system suffers. And when the whole system suffers, you pay more every month on your energy bills.

So if you feel your home may not be as energy efficient as it could be, you have several options. You can pay to have your HVAC system serviced, you can have your windows replaced, you can have your ductwork insulated, or you can insulate your attic. And while the other home improvement projects can be quite costly, addressing your attic insulation can be a nice cost-effective alternative.

Attic insulation is designed to keep your home warm and cozy in the winter and nice and cool in the summer. If your attic insulation levels are low, your HVAC system will have to work twice as hard to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. And guess what? That will cost you some money!

So what should you do?

For starters, perform a visual inspection of your attic insulation. Look across the span of the attic. If you cannot see your floor joists and your insulation is evenly distributed throughout the attic, you probably have enough insulation. Adding more would just be a waste of money. But if your insulation level is just below your floor joists, you should add more.

So what are you waiting for? Start insulating!

In fact, ENERGY STAR estimates that properly insulating your attic could save you up to 20% on your heating and cooling costs. The recommended insulation level for most attics is R-38 (or about 12–15 inches, depending on the insulation type). In the coldest climates, insulating up to R-49 is recommended.

So get to work making your home more energy efficient and start saving money!

Winter Deck Maintenance for Low Maintenance Decking

January 6th, 2012

Yes, you read that title correctly. After all, low maintenance does not mean no maintenance. This is especially true during winter – that time of the year when decks are most vulnerable. Fortunately, composite decks require less maintenance and hold up in inclimate weather better than traditional wood decking (with the right maintenance).

Take a look at these composite decking maintenance tips:

  1. Most decking professionals do not recommend using a power washer on your low maintenance deck. However, if you do, use a fan tip nozzle and spray in the direction of the brush/grain pattern. Be sure to use proper safety precautions, including the recommended maximum pressure of 1500 psi.
  2. While rare, if mildew or mold appear on your composite deck, deal with the problem as soon as possible. In most cases, you can rid yourself of mildew with a sponge and a simple solution of liquid dish soap and water. Maintaining a clean, dry surface at all times is the best method to combat mildew.
  3. If it snows, leave the snow shovel inside. Instead, grab a broom and get to sweeping. Shovels can gouge and damage your composite deck surface.
  4. Also, be careful if you decide to use a deicer or salt. These products can damage your deck. Be sure to rinse deicers and salt away as soon as the weather warms up.

Remember: a low maintenance deck still requires a little maintenance. So don’t neglect your composite deck this winter.

Winter Maintenance of Your Sugar Hill Deck

Sealing Your Deck Before Winter

December 28th, 2011

Your wood deck is extremely vulnerable to the elements, especially during winter. Rain, ultraviolet light, dew, frost, freezing temperatures, ice, and snow can all wreak havoc on an unprotected deck, jeopardizing both its longevity and appearance. This is why it is so important to stain and seal your deck before winter sets in.

Preparing the Deck: It doesn’t matter if you are staining an old or new wood deck, first you must inspect the surface for cleanliness and make sure it is free from mildew, stains, dirt, and other contaminants.

Selecting the Stain: Be sure to choose a product that is both a stain and a sealer. This will significantly cut down on your work, providing both beauty and a water-repellent finish all in one application. Though more applications may be necessary to achieve your desired look.

Applying the Stain: First, check the weather forecast. Have you heard the saying “don’t rain on my parade?” Well, rain on your deck-staining project is probably worse. So be sure the weatherman is calling for clear skies.

Then, before you get to work, test a patch of wood to make sure you like the color stain you have chosen.

Deck Maintenance: Clear finishes require reapplication every six months to a year, while pigmented finishes and stains require reapplication every two to four years.

So what are you waiting for? Get to work! If you don’t take care of your deck, it may not survive the harsh winter weather.
