Did the snow break your gutters? Replace them now!

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

So it’s no secret that the snowstorms that hit in February of earlier this year were record breaking. Maryland hasn’t seen over three feet of snow in years! The biggest issue people faced at the time was now that it’s here; what do we do with it? Parking lots, streets, businesses and neighborhoods had very few options. The snow was plowed and moved to various places as quickly and efficiently as possible, but it was still very difficult for people to deal with.

However, those issues simply fell under “inconveniences.” The real problem came with the “damage” soon discovered that the snow had caused, starting with the first thing that it hit; people’s roofs caught by gutters. Gutter damage has been a serious issue that many homeowners have been dealing with as a result of the snowstorms.

Gutters have been flooded, broken, hanging and worst of all have fallen off. The extreme heavy snow and piercing ice are not easy for gutters to withstand. They begin to falter and eventually fall. Then the question becomes, who is going to pay for my broken gutters and repair them? Unfortunately natural weather conditions don’t fall with checks and rebates. But getting them replaced as soon as possible is vitally important and Allied Remodeling can help!

Ignoring broken or damaged gutters can be much more detrimental to your home than you could ever imagine. They can lead to extreme water damage in all areas of your home and ultimately flooding. If your gutters aren’t working properly, there is nothing stopping the rain from soaking into your homes foundation and consequently coming through your walls or doors. This then creates a “home flood” that will not be easy to take care of.

A gutters purpose is to create a diversion for the water to flow away from your house and its foundation. If they aren’t working, and are not diverting the water anywhere but straight down, then the water will have no problem with seeping right into your home. So if you have damaged or broken gutters, act now! Don’t wait to call. Especially with the extreme high volume of people needing assistance and replacement after our recent winter wonderland of snow.

We specialize in gutter installation and replacement and would be happy to assist you in your time of “gutter need.” For more information on roofs or gutters, please visit our website at www.alliedremodeling.com

Questions from you, answers from the experts!

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Do you ever wish you could sit a contracting expert down and ask them all the FAQs you have always wanted to know? Well you don’t have to wish any longer. Here are some of the most common frequently asked contracting questions (including windows, roofs, siding and decks) we have heard from past experience accompanied by thorough answers from the experts:

Q: What is the u-value of your windows?
A: .23 for double pane energy star rated windows and .18 for triple pane energy star rated windows.

Q: Do you offer discounts if both my neighbor and I want to have our roofs done together.
A: Good question. Yes we do. It’s best to have both of you there during the estimate so we can determine exactly what you both want in order to come up with a firm estimate.

Q: How important is the thickness of the vinyl siding I use?
A: We have experienced fewer service issues with panels exceeding .046” gauge in thickness. The best VALUE is in the panel that combines both .046” and better gauge thickness while including high concentrations of impact modifiers and color stabilizers.

Q: What is the warranty on your windows?
A: Full lifetime warranty.

Q: How long does the typical siding job take?
A: We have installed siding on homes in as little as 2 days and larger homes and commercial projects that have taken weeks, it truly depends on the size of the project.

Q: Is it okay to install vinyl siding in the winter?
A: In the hands of an experienced professional it is acceptable to install vinyl siding during the winter months.

Q: Why do I see lots of seams on some resided homes and very few on others?
A: The number of seams in your final project is a function of the length of the siding panel used, how each row of siding is started, and how much waste the contractor allows. Using scraps and small pieces, although unacceptable to us, can cut costs substantially.

Q: I’ve got a concrete porch that I’d like to replace with a composite deck. Will your company take care of the demo as well, or will I need to hire someone else?
A: Our estimate will include demolition, permit fees and installation of the new deck.

Q: My roof currently has two layers of shingles. I’ve been told that it’s illegal to put on another layer. Is that true?
A: Maryland fire code restricts homeowners to two layers of shingles. It will be necessary to remove both layers.

Q: How long does it take to get windows put in?
A: Typically 4 weeks from the time of order.

Q: I have heard that composite decking can get very hot in the sun. Is this true, and should I consider wood as an option around a very sunny pool area?
A: It is true that composite decking can get hot in direct sun. However, several of the composites we offer are designed with hollow areas running through them which allows air to circulate and cool the boards. The biggest concern for a “pool area” would be a smooth vs. grain finish on the boards. A smooth finish can be slippery so it is I important to choose a composite with a deep grain. We offer several products that fit that description.

Q: Do your windows come in any other color besides white?
A: Our windows come in 25 different exterior colors

Q: My roof is leaking badly. I’m concerned about the condition of the wood under the shingles. How will that be addressed?
A: Wood replacement can be an important part of a roofing job. If your sheathing is damaged our installers will be careful to replace any areas that might be rotted or weak.

Q: My community has strict standards on what can be built. I also understand that a county permit is required. Will your company provide us with drawings and things so that we can get the project approved?
A: Our representative will help you design a project that fits within the county regulations as well as your community standards. We will provide you with a drawing, work order and material sample (if required) for your homeowners association.

Q: I’m interested in having my roof installed soon. I realize that it is starting to get cold outside. Do you install roofs in the cold weather?
A: We install roof year round abiding by Certainteed’s installation procedures which allows for installation on days when the temperature exceeds 39 degrees.

Q: What different types of deck railing do you offer?
A: In addition to a variety of wood products, we offer vinyl, composite, aluminum and privacy fencing.

Q: We’re interested in starting our roofing project pretty soon. We are selling the house and are on a pretty tight schedule. How long will the project take?
A: We can complete most roof installations in one day. In most cases we are able to begin work within one week of the order.

Q: I have an existing deck on my home. Its several years old, but I think it was built pretty well. Is it possible to remove the boards and replace them without rebuilding the whole thing?
A: In most cases, if your deck was built to code, it is possible.

Q: Do I need to replace my interior molding when I replace my windows?
A: No, your interior molding stays and remains untouched.

Q: Can you recommend a company for tree removal.
A: Yes in most cases I can recommend a company who I trust to help you with projects that we don’t do. Please call me so that we can discuss in more detail exactly what you would like to have done.

Q: I am installing drywall in my house but I’m not very good at mudding and sanding can you give me any tips.
A: That is truly an art form. It’s always best to leave that part for a professional. However if you insist on tackling it yourself, try using a wet sponge as opposed to sandpaper. You will never see a professional do it that way but it is a lot easier for a novice. Remember, it’s never too late to call a professional if you get in over your head.

Q: I have a slate roof. I’m not sure whether I want to repair it or replace it with asphalt shingles. What options would your company have for my situation?
A: We do not repair slate roofs. However, we do have several slate style asphalt shingles which are available with Lifetime warranties.

Which should you choose: Wood, Aluminum or Vinyl siding?

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Whether your building a new home or upgrading the siding on your existing home, choosing the right siding can be quite the challenging task. There are several choices and it is many times difficult to weigh the pros and cons of each. We’re going to help you examine three different types today and see if this can bring any clarity to your current (or possibly near-future) siding dilemma.

First we have wood.

Wooden siding can be very beautiful and initially give your home that natural look, yet there can be many issues with it that could potentially lead to problems down the road.  Here are some of them:

-requires more maintenance than any other type of siding

-requires treatment every few years

-inviting to insects

-paints and stains used to preserve and protect wood can be toxic (can be expensive)

-insulation and structural support are minimal

-many times has a distinctive odor (you’ll want to test a sample to see if you can tolerate it)

Lets talk aluminum.

Aluminum siding can provide a smooth finish and is relatively maintenance free. Aluminum is also fairly durable, fire-resistant, recyclable and can resist rotting or insects. However, aluminum does have it’s drawbacks. Here are a few:

- metal sidings are very energy-intensive to manufacture

- doesn’t provide insulation for the structure

- metals are a non-renewable resource in the sense that they are a finite resource, meaning the earth cannot get any more of them than it already has

- dents very easily (hail, heavy snow, rocks, sports balls, etc.)

We’ve saved the best for last; Vinyl.

Installing vinyl siding is a great way to increase the value and energy efficiency of your home while giving it a brand new look that is completely maintenance free. There are many profiles, color combinations and trim accessories designed to complement your home and your neighborhood. CertainTeed, (the brand installed by Allied Remodeling) offers the widest color palette in the industry with a broad line of high-quality siding products that are backed with outstanding warranty coverage. Here are a few pros to vinyl siding:

- very little maintenance; no need to ever paint or stain the siding

- easy to install

- multiple color and grain options

- durable

- cost-effective

- provides structural strength and wind resistance

Our featured project of the week!

Monday, April 5th, 2010

This project, located in Perry Hall, included the installation of Certainteed Monogram vinyl siding accented on the gables and chimney with Certainteed Cedar Impressions half round shingles. Hunter green raised panel shutters and vinyl window mantles accent the new Vytex double casement windows. A custom vinyl bay window was installed to enhance the curb appeal of the home while adding depth to the kitchen area. All of the wooden trim was covered before installing new gutters and downspouts. The finished project represents a distinguished, completely maintenance free exterior.
